The Speed Group F1000 Championship moved to Snetterton for the second race meeting of the season, and the racing action produced three different winners from the three races run!
Reigning champ Michael Watton took a comfortable Race 1 win from pole to continue his 100% 2018 win record, and running relatively unchallenged ahead of the following pack. With Watton out front by over four seconds the main battle was for the remaining podium places. After holding second for the opening laps, Paul Butcher was going well until being forced into retirement with gear box gremlins. Dan Clowes inherited the runner up spot but was pressured by former champion Rob Sayell, making a return to racing at his home track, Adam Walker and Alok Iyengar. Sayell eventually got past Clowes with only a couple of laps left to finish second, with Clowes following taking third and holding off Walker, fourth. Iyengar was next to cross the line in fifth ahead of Dax Ward.
The reverse grid Race 2 produced a great drive from Elliot Mitchell. Starting from pole, Mitchell led the pack away and over the first lap built himself up a little breathing space as those behind jostled for position and with Clowes and Watton giving chase. Invitation Cup runner Dan Levy also had an excellent start to the race fending off the Championship runners over the opening lap, before being swallowed up by the pack. As Clowes and Watton began to close in on the race leader it became apparent that Mitchell had received a 10 second jump start penalty, at this time Watton also had problems of his own as he was visibly loosing coolant and speed. As Watton started to fall back through the field, Mitchell still plugged away at the front seemingly unaware of his penalty but putting in a great drive to take the win ‘on the road’. In reality though it was Clowes who took the win in front of Sayell with Mitchell dropping to third, but having shown great potential. Iyengar improved on his first race performance to finish fourth ahead of Walker and Butcher, who had a solid recovery drive from the back of the grid due to his Race 1 DNF. Watton managed to finish the race but had to pull out of the rest of the weekend, as the loss of coolant resulted in engine damage, but he was not the only driver affected. Ward, unaware of the situation, was caught out on the coolant on the track and sustained damage as his car hit the barriers.
Having set the fastest lap in Race 2, Sayell led away from pole at the start of the third encounter, and despite Clowes’s efforts to challenge, was never taken out of the lead as he finished his weekend off with a win. Clowes had to settle for second as the battle for third went right the way to the chequered flag where Iyengar held off walker to take third, and his best result of the season so far. Ward, having made the start of the race after repairs were made to his car, had a decent result in fifth after a race long battle with the Sonic Equipment Invitation Cup winner Levy. Sixth in the championship class went to Rob Bailey.
Despite his 10 second jump start penalty Mitchell put in a great drive in Race 2, finding himself at the front of the field for the first time and leading the entire race and resulting him being named as the Sonic Equipment Driver of the Meeting.
For lengthy work to get Butcher back out racing after engine woes, Team Paul Butcher were awarded the Sonic Equipment Technician of the Meeting.
