Two out of Three for Morgan at Cadwell

Cadwell Park Podium

After a difficult start to the season having scored no points during the opening rounds at Brands Hatch, Lee Morgan finally got his championship campaign underway by winning two out of the three races at Cadwell Park.

Morgan started on pole for the first race of the weekend and looked on course for taking the win, only to be denied after suffering with both a handling issue and loose throttle linkage. Michael Watton had been following Morgan for much of the race and closed in to take the lead on the final lap and the chequered flag. A great result for Watton, the win was his first in just over two years and was a bonus celebration on what was his birthday weekend. Rob Sayell shadowed the leading pair but had to settle for third, just under a couple of tenths behind Morgan.

Morgan clearly wanted to make up for the race one problems, and after starting seventh on the reversed grid he had made it up to third by the end of the first lap, and on lap two put himself up into second having passed Dan Clowes. For a number of laps a good battle was witnessed between Morgan and the leader, Paul Butcher. However, after getting passed Butcher, Morgan began to pull away and he took his first win of the 2017 season. Butcher and Clowes crossed the finish line to take second and third respectively.

Starting again on pole for race three, Morgan was in confident mood but having to share the front row of the grid with race one winner Watton, and with Butcher in third, he knew he had to get a good start. And that is what he did, although Watton lost out to Butcher which would prove costly. Untroubled at the front Morgan took a lights to flag win ahead of the battle for second. Despite all his efforts, Watton could do nothing to overcome Butcher - the pair going wheel to wheel on several occasions. A great defensive drive rewarded Butcher with second whilst Watton stood on the final step on the podium.
